Educate

We support music educators who work with children and young people, so they can empower them to compose and create their own music.

We advocate for composing and music creation to be at the heart of every child’s music education, and we do this through national activity such as our #CanCompose campaign and work with all composers on our programmes to share their creative processes and ideas with young people.

As a National Youth Music Organisation, we are working with partners to create a network of support for young composers and those who educate them.

Published in 2019, #CanCompose outlines the findings of our National Music Educators’ Survey, the first of its kind in the UK. It revealed the significant barriers faced by young people looking to create their own music, offering a unique perspective on an area often overlooked and recommendations on the changes needed to remove them.

This partnership project with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Birmingham City University worked with primary school teachers and composers to develop activity for children in year 4 and 5, improving the quality of composing in primary schools and developing unique research into how children compose.  Findings and resource will be shared in 2024.
